He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and later as one of the first two U.S. Senators from Texas after it became a state. He is the only individual elected governor of two different U.S. states (Tennessee and Texas). The city of Houston, Texas—the most populous city in the U.S. state of Texas and the Southern United States—is named after him, as he was the general who won Texas's independence from Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto.
